a nyc love affair?
New York City is home to more than 8.5 million people. More than half of the city’s population moved into New York from another place, either within or outside of the US.
Many of us remember the first months in the city and the emotional roller coaster we were on. The theory of culture shock, explains the extreme emotions we have experienced when adapting to New York.

By xx draws inspiration from the stages of culture shock to create 4+ chapters that describe our nyc journeys. The city map invites New Yorkers to reflect on their journey and share their past and present chapters. The goal of the project is to collect peoples’ memories and provide a point of connection for New Yorkers. Our nyc journeys reveal a hidden dimension of the electric city; the power to connect.
Project Goal
Our nyc journeys aims to highlight New York as a unifier that brings together a disconnected audience. By turning the city map into a collection of interwoven individual journeys our participants see beyond the elements that set them apart. This subjective map creates an alternative urban geography, revealing the emotional dimension of a human city.

By xx is a multi-disciplinary, New York-based collective that uses experimental language and strategic tools to create experiences that help people with diverse backgrounds realize that they have more in common than they think. By xx believes that design can generate questions and spark dialogue among the participants.
The collective met in the summer of 2019 through the graduate program of Fashion Institute of Technology. Yunray’s thesis “NEW AMERICANA” is what brought the team together and inspired the project ‘our nyc journeys’.

is an architect and experience designer based in New York. Chang focuses on the audience by developing Persona Matrix and Empathy maps. He morphs his ability to empathize with the end user into participatory experiences that create connections among the people.
Tina Columbus
Concept / Content / Graphic Design
is a New York based exhibition and experience designer and interior architect with international work experience. Tina develops concepts in an analytical way to create meaningful experiences that engage the end users emotionally and mentally.
YunRay Chung
Concept / Promotion Strategy
is a Taiwanese artist who is currently based in New York City. He uses second-hand garments deconstruction, performances, installation and films to speak to social issues, but also human emotions and experiences. His MFA thesis “NEW AMERICANA” is what inspired ‘our nyc journeys’ project.
